REVISED AND IMPROVED FOR NEW PARENTS: pack_98_parent_handbook_2013_revised.pdf

Welcome new parents!

Pack 98 is the Cub Scout Pack located at Barkstall elementary, but is not limited only to Barkstall students. Our emphasis for the boys in Pack 98 is:

Outside activities and learning life skills in a structured setting run by parents. Cub Scouting is for boys who will be 1st to 5th graders for the school year beginning Summer/Fall 2014. Starting in April, current kindergartners are welcome to attend events with a parent or guardian.

Please come join us on April 27th for a fishing trip to Homer Lake.

NO EQUIPMENT OR EXPERIENCE IS NECESSARY. Come meet our Scouts and Leaders, get outside, and maybe even catch a fish!

Siblings and families are always welcome at Scouting events, so bring your whole family.

We will depart from Barkstall at 1 PM and drive as a convoy to Homer Lake (30 minutes away), where we have reserved the Walnut Hill shelter. Click here for a link to Homer Lake.

The shelter has tables, restrooms and water. Please bring a mid-afternoon snack for your family.

Can’t come fishing on the 27th? See the calendar for other events:

  • Through May 22nd, we have Den Meetings on Thursdays from 7-8 PM - come check us out. (Important!! April 24th is a Barkstall concert, so no meetings that Thursday.)
  • We have overnight family camping trip on May 17th-18th. NO EQUIPMENT OR EXPERIENCE IS NECESSARY. We will be staying at Boy Scout Camp Drake, about 40 minutes away.
  • We will have group Pack events during June and July, then start our normal Den meetings at the end of July.

About Scouting:

The Cub Scout program combines fun with educational opportunities and lifelong values. It helps parents to help their boys strengthen character, develop good citizenship, and enhance both mental and physical fitness. The program also provides boys with a positive peer group and the tools to shape their future. About Pack 98:

Pack 98 has consistently been a top pack in the region since its creation in 1998. Created and run by parents of Barkstall students, we are a non-denominational Pack run by trained volunteers. We are committed to providing a healthy atmosphere for our sons to explore and learn about their world.

During the 2013/2014 school year (so far!), Pack 98 has provided our boys with these experiences:

  • Overnight camping at Boy Scout Camp Drake with a hike and campfire program.
  • Creating and racing their own Pinewood Derby car at a race hosted by the Mayor of Champaign.
  • Visits from the U of I Insect Zoo and U of I Math Outreach organizations.
  • Three day hikes at local parks led by Cub Master Brian Clague.
  • Tours of the U of I biology greenhouse, WDWS radio station, and Busey bank.
  • A private demonstration of remote controlled aircraft.
  • A celebratory banquet on Scouting’s anniversary with a magic show.

We have more events coming up this summer – see the calendar below.
